What Is Local SEO? A Practical Guide to Ranking in Your City
What local SEO is, how Google ranks businesses in Maps and local results, and a 30-day plan with the local SEO tips that actually bring in calls.
Local SEO is everything that makes your business show up when someone searches for what you do near them: “plumber Austin”, “auto shop open Sunday”, “roofer near me”. These searches happen right when people need you. Showing up at that moment means you get the call, not your competitor.
This guide is the starting point of our local SEO articles. If you’re looking for a local SEO agency to handle it, that’s what we do. But everything below can be done in-house.

What a customer sees when they search for you
On a local search, three areas compete for attention:
Ads
Paid, labeled "Sponsored". That’s Google Ads (and Local Services Ads): visible right away, as long as you pay.
The Map Pack
The map and the top three business profiles. A large share of calls happen here. It’s target #1.
Organic results
Websites. Yours can rank for far more searches than your profile alone.
Local SEO targets areas 2 and 3: free and long-lasting. Increasingly, Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity also answer local questions, and they rely on the same sources: your profile, your website, your reviews.
Google’s 3 local ranking factors
Google explains it in its own help center:
| Factor | What it means | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | Does your business match the search? | Right category on your profile, one page per service, your customers’ words |
| Distance | How far are you from the searcher? | Nothing about your address, but pages for the cities you serve |
| Prominence | How well known and trusted are you? | Reviews, links from local websites, listings on the right directories |
The 3 pillars of local SEO
Google Business Profile
No profile, no Map Pack. Category, services, service area, photos, reviews: every setting counts.

One page per service and per main city. It’s what convinces people to call.

Steady reviews, consistent information everywhere, useful directories and local links.
Your website: what your profile can’t do
Your profile gets you on Maps. Your website gets you found for many more searches, and it’s what builds trust before the call. For local SEO, it needs:
- one page per main service, with real content;
- one page per main city if you serve several, with local content (jobs completed there, response times), not a copy where only the city name changes;
- name, address and phone in the footer, exactly as on your profile;
- structured data (schema markup): invisible code that tells Google, and AI tools, “this is a local business, here’s its address, hours and service area”.
Local SEO tips for your reputation
- Reviews, requested after every completed job, with a reply to each one.
- Consistent citations: an old phone number on a directory or a different address on Facebook muddies the signal. List where you appear and fix it.
- The right directories: Yelp, BBB, Nextdoor, Angi, plus your trade association and your city. Not hundreds.
- Local links: your chamber of commerce, a team you sponsor, a supplier, local news. These come from real relationships, not from buying them.
A 30-day local SEO plan
-
Week 1
Your Google Business Profile
Verified, right primary category, services, service area, hours, ten real photos.
-
Week 2
Citations and directories
Name, address and phone identical everywhere. Fix existing listings, add the three or four that matter.
-
Week 3
Reviews
Send your review link to recent happy customers, reply to every review, make it a habit after each job.
-
Week 4
Your website
One page per main service, service area spelled out, contact details matching your profile. City pages come next.
-
Then, every month
Measure and adjust
A GeoGrid on your main searches, call and form tracking, and one action on your weakest area.
What works, what gets you penalized
Avoid
- A fake address or virtual office to appear in another city
- Keywords stuffed into your business name
- Buying reviews: against Google’s rules and targeted by the FTC
- Dozens of empty or copy-pasted city pages
- Judging your rank from a search on your own phone
Do
- An honest service area and pages for the cities you really serve
- Your real business name and a precise category
- A review link sent after every happy customer
- Useful pages with real jobs and local details
- A GeoGrid to see your rank neighborhood by neighborhood
Measure leads, not just rankings
Local SEO is judged by what it brings in. Every month, track:
Leads
Calls, forms, direction requests, messages. The only number that pays the bills.
Maps visibility
A GeoGrid on your two or three main searches, to see the areas you gain and lose.
Profile performance
Views, calls and website clicks, right in your Google Business Profile.
Searches that bring visitors
In Google Search Console: which searches send people to your website.
Reading the numbers
Rankings up but leads flat? The problem is usually on your website or your profile (photos, reviews, information). Leads coming from one area and not another? A GeoGrid will tell you why.
Frequently asked questions
What is local SEO in simple terms?
Local SEO is everything that helps your business show up when someone searches for what you do near them, like "electrician Denver" or "roofer near me". It covers your Google Business Profile, your website and your reputation online.
What's the difference between SEO and local SEO?
SEO is the overall work of ranking in Google's organic results. Local SEO is the part focused on searches tied to a place. It adds the Google Business Profile, reviews and local citations to the usual website work.
Does local SEO work if I cover a large service area?
Yes. Google shows local results based on where the searcher is. If you serve several cities, you need a strong Google Business Profile, a page on your website for each main city, and reviews from customers in those areas.
How long does local SEO take?
Fixes to your Google Business Profile can show results within a few weeks. Website pages, reviews and local links build over several months. The timeline mostly depends on how competitive your industry is in your city.
Do business directories still matter for local SEO?
A few do: Yelp, the Better Business Bureau, Nextdoor, Angi and the directories of your trade or city. They keep your information consistent and can send you customers directly. There's no need to list your business on hundreds of low-quality sites.
